CompTIA Tech+ security essentials

CompTIA Tech+ Certification

When I first started preparing for CompTIA Tech+, the security essentials section felt overwhelming. I had barely any IT background, so terms like MFA, firewalls, and encryption were new to me. What helped me was practicing with Tech+ practice tests on SkillTestPro, which broke down questions into manageable chunks.

On exam day, one of my first performance-based questions asked me to configure a firewall rule to block FTP traffic. Thanks to practice, I remembered FTP uses port 21. There were also multiple-choice questions on strong passwords, phishing attacks, and VPNs.

If you’re new like me, here are my tips:

  • Memorize common ports (80, 443, 21, 53).
  • Practice under the 60-minute time limit.
  • Review SkillTestPro’s explanations—sometimes they teach more than the textbooks.

I passed with a 710/900, and honestly, security essentials were the toughest part. If I managed it, so can you.
